Disposal of Old Computer and Electronics to Protect the Environment

Electronics

Get rid of an old gadget or appliance as soon as you get a new one. Gadgets and tech products lose value quickly, so the longer you wait, the more worthless they get. Check Ebay to see if the gadget is worth something. Make sure to look at actual sales, not listings with initial prices that didn’t get any bids. You will usually get a better price on Ebay rather than trying to sell it in a more limited venue, like Craigslist.

If you can’t sell it, consider donating or recycling it.

Staples recycles used computers, monitors, desktop printers and fax machines even if the item wasn’t purchased there. The recycling fee is $10.00 per large item.

GreenDisk (www.greendisk.com) accepts everything from cell phones to laptop computers to iPods. Pack items in your own box, print a label from the site and ship. The cost for disposal of up to 20 pounds is $6.95. GreenDisk will also send you a collection box and pick it up for an additional charge.

Call2Recycle a nonprofit organization, offers consumers and retailers in the United States and Canada simple ways to recycle old phones. Consumers can enter their zip code on the group’s website and be directed to a drop box in their area. Most major electronics retailers, from Radio Shack to Office Depot, participate in the program and offer Call2Recycle drop-boxes in their stores. Call2Recycle recovers the phones and sells them back to manufacturers, which either refurbish and resell them or recycle their parts for use in making new products.

The National Cristina Foundation accepts computer equipment that is in working order for donation

Goodwill and The Salvation Army accept electronics in some areas, so call your local agency to find out if they participate in these donation programs.
